Projects

This page offers a glimpse at some of the projects I have in progress. Some are individual pieces, others are part of an ongoing series of compositions, but they’re all music I’ve enjoyed creating and that I’d like to share with you.

Church Songs

Since July 2019, I have been writing a song a week based on the lectionary for Christ Church United Methodist church in Southwick MA, where I have served as organist for several years.  These musical reactions to and interpretations of scripture are a lot of fun to think about and create, and hopefully fun to listen to as well.  I am grateful to the congregation and pastor Ken at CCUM for indulging my creativity and grateful to my wife Kara for being a loving listener and perceptive editor for each and every song.

Fungi from Yuggoth

When I was in my early teens, my father brought home a paperback edition of H. P. Lovecraft’s novella The Case of Charles Dexter Ward.  My reading life changed forever.  Like so many fans of so-called “weird fiction,” my creative processes have been indelibly influenced by Lovecraft’s inimitable prose and unforgettable mythos.  Between 1929 and 1930, he wrote a series of 36 sonnets collectively titled Fungi from Yuggoth.  The atmosphere they create is vintage Lovecraft, and they make ideal subjects for similarly atmospheric musical settings.  I have set the first eight for voice and rock band.  Here are a few samples.
